Claude and the Bluebeam MCP

Bluebeam Max connects Claude to Revu through its own MCP server. Here is what the 30 published functions actually let it do, sourced from Bluebeam's own documentation, and what still is not on the list.

The short version

A Bluebeam Max plan and Revu 21.9 or later get you a connector to Claude, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT or AnythingLLM. Once it is on, the AI model can read the document, search it, manage markups, and set the page scale, 30 functions in total, grouped across nine jobs.

What is not in the list is the whole of quantity takeoff. There is no function that measures an area, a length or a count, and VisualSearch, the symbol-matching panel, is not published as one of the 30 either. Connecting Claude to Revu, and what to do with it

Know what the connection actually requires

A Bluebeam Max plan gates the connector: Bluebeam states plainly that "this feature is only available with a Bluebeam Max plan." Revu 21.9 or later is the floor, a handful of individual functions want 21.10 or 21.11, and both Revu and its MCP server are Windows-only, so a Mac install of Revu is not part of this regardless of plan.

Bluebeam documents setup for four AI clients: Claude, GitHub Copilot CLI, ChatGPT and AnythingLLM. The steps below follow Claude specifically, since that is what most of the setup guides and this page cover, but the shape is the same for any of them: install the client, point it at the server Revu ships, and Revu relays to whichever document you have open.

Turn the connector on in Revu, then connect Claude to it

Open Revu, go to Preferences, then Admin, then MCP, select MCP Enabled, and click OK. Close and reopen Revu, return to the same panel, select Claude for Windows, and click OK again. That is the Revu side done.

On the Claude desktop app, open the add-files icon, go to Connectors, and confirm Bluebeam is listed and selected. Bluebeam’s own troubleshooting note, worth keeping handy: if the connector does not appear, quit Claude completely from the tray icon or Task Manager and relaunch it, or clear its cache from Help, then Troubleshooting, then Clear Cache and Restart.

Know the 30 functions by what they cover, not by their count

Thirty is a number worth being precise about rather than rounding, because the shape of the list is the actual answer to "what can it do." Grouped by what each one touches: reading the document, managing markups, tracking state and workflow, searching content, working with colour, reaching Studio, editing the document itself, exporting or importing custom columns, and one function, set_page_scale, in a group of its own for measurements.

That last group is the detail worth sitting with. Quantity takeoff, area, length, count, does not appear anywhere in the published function list. A model connected this way can read a document, search it, touch its markups, and set its scale. It cannot measure it.

Ask it the things the function list actually supports

Grounded in the groups above rather than in what sounds plausible: "How many pages are in this set, and which ones have layers?" reads document information. "Find every markup with the subject Duplex Receptacle and list their pages" searches content and markups already in the file. "Set the scale on this page to a quarter inch equals one foot" is the one measurement function there is. "Delete every markup in the Demo layer on page four" and "export a custom column of every markup’s area to CSV" both touch markup management and custom columns.

Every one of those works because a function for it exists. "Count the receptacles on E-201" does not, and asking it anyway gets a plausible-sounding answer built from whatever markups already happen to be in the file, not a real count.

Where takeoff still happens by hand

VisualSearch, the feature that matches a symbol you box and counts the rest of the sheet, is a Revu panel, not one of the 30 functions. The closest published function, search, works on the document’s text and markup data, not its geometry, so it cannot stand in for it.

That means asking Claude to run a takeoff through this connection does not run one. At best it lists count markups somebody already placed, or creates new ones at coordinates you supply yourself. The boxing, the sensitivity slider and the checking that VisualSearch actually does stays a Revu-native operation with nobody automated behind it, and the honest workflow for doing that part well is its own guide.

Decide what it can touch before you point it at a real set

Bluebeam puts the safety question in the client’s hands rather than Revu’s: "Most AI models allow you toggle specific Bluebeam MCP skills on or off and can be configured to ask your permission before running tools or executing commands." Claude’s own Connectors panel backs that up, letting you "choose when Claude is allowed to use each tool or use the dropdown list to apply the selection to all tools at once."

Read that setting before the first real prompt on a live bid set, not after. A function list that includes delete_markup and redact is a function list worth reviewing tool by tool the first time, rather than approving in one pass because the demo went well.

  • Assuming a lower Revu plan gets you the connector

    It does not. Bluebeam states the MCP connector is a Max-plan feature, on top of Revu 21.9 or later.

  • Assuming VisualSearch is one of the 30 functions

    It is not published in the function list. Search works on text and markup data, not on matching a symbol’s shape.

  • Trying this from a Mac

    Revu and its MCP server are Windows-only, regardless of which AI client or plan you are on.

  • Leaving every function approved on a live bid set

    delete_markup and redact are both in the list. Review the permission toggle the first time, before the first real prompt.

Questions people ask

Do I need a Bluebeam Max plan to connect Claude to Revu?

Yes. Bluebeam states the MCP connector is only available with a Bluebeam Max plan, on top of Revu 21.9 or later, and the connection is Windows-only regardless of plan.

Can Claude run a takeoff through the Bluebeam MCP server?

No. The published function list has one measurement function, set_page_scale, and nothing that computes an area, a length or a count. Claude can read a document, search it, and manage its markups, but the actual measuring, VisualSearch’s symbol matching included, is not one of the 30 functions it can call.

Which AI clients does the Bluebeam MCP server support?

That depends on how the connector is configured rather than on anything Revu enforces itself. Bluebeam’s own documentation says most AI models let you toggle specific skills on or off and can be configured to ask permission before running a tool, and Claude’s own Connectors panel lets you set that per tool or for all of them at once. Check it before the first real prompt.

Is the Bluebeam MCP server the same thing Caliente AI uses?

The same server binary, not the same connection. Bluebeam ships that server inside Revu itself, and Bluebeam Max is what lets a client like Claude reach it through Revu’s own connector. Caliente’s desktop app talks to that identical binary directly, over the same protocol, rather than through Bluebeam Max’s Claude Desktop connector, and what it does with the connection is built by us, not by Bluebeam.

What Caliente AI does with the connection

Caliente’s own Bluebeam adapter is an MCP client too, speaking directly to the server Revu ships, over the same protocol this page describes. That connection is ours, built into the Caliente desktop app, and does not require a Bluebeam Max plan the way the Claude Desktop connector above does. What we build on top of it is different from a general-purpose AI client: our AI model reads the sheet, works out what the scope covers, and drives Revu to place the takeoff itself, area, length and count, as native, editable markups in the Markups list you already use. It asks before it writes.
