The short version
Calibrate the sheet against a dimension you can trust. Measure with the tool that produces the unit you price in. Name and layer the markups as you go. Total them in the Markups list and export.
Nearly all of the difficulty is in the first and third of those. The measuring is the part that feels like the work and the part that causes the fewest problems.
The workflow, in order
Set the scale before you measure anything
Every number on the sheet comes out of this one setting, so it is the step worth slowing down for. Open the Measurements panel and calibrate: pick two points on the drawing whose real distance you know, then type that distance in.
Calibrating beats picking the stated scale off the title block. A set that has been printed, scanned, or resized no longer matches what the title block says, and the drawing is the thing you are measuring. A known gridline spacing or a dimensioned wall run gives you the truth.
Confirm the scale on each sheet, not once for the set
Scale belongs to the page, not the document. A-101 at 1/8" and A-501 at 3/4" are normal in the same set, and an enlarged plan or a detail callout can carry its own scale on the same page as the plan it came from.
Revu will apply a scale to the whole document if you ask it to. That is a convenience on a uniform set and a trap on a real one. Check the panel when you land on a new sheet and it stays a two second habit instead of a rerun.
Match the tool to the unit you are pricing in
The measurement type decides the unit that lands in the markup, so pick it from how the work gets priced rather than from how it looks on the sheet.

Dynamic Fill is worth learning for the area work. You bound a region with the fill tool and it takes the shape of the space instead of asking you to trace the perimeter click by click, which is where the hours go on a floor plan with a lot of geometry.
Make the markup carry the information
A takeoff that only exists as coloured shapes on a sheet has to be re-read by hand later. Name the subject for what the measurement is, put it on its own layer, and add the columns you will want to sort by: system, level, phase, whichever way you build the bid.
Save the ones you repeat into a Tool Chest set. A 4" slab measured the same way on every job means the next sheet starts with the tool already set up, and it means two people on the same set produce quantities that add up together.
Read the quantities back out
The Markups list is where the takeoff turns into a number. Sort or group by subject and Revu totals each group for you, so 34 area measurements become 2,096 SF without a calculator.
From there, export the summary to CSV and it opens in the spreadsheet you price in. Drop a Legend on the sheet as well if the set goes out to anyone else: it puts the counts and the colours on the drawing, where a reviewer can check them against the work.
Run the checks that catch the expensive mistakes
Takeoff errors are rarely a slip of the mouse. They are structural, they repeat, and they follow the bid to the number you submit.
The scale carried over from the last sheet
The most common one, and the one that scales the error. Every quantity on the sheet is wrong by the same ratio, which makes it hard to spot in a total that still looks plausible.
The same area counted twice
An overall plan and an enlarged partial of the same corridor both get measured, usually by two people or by one person on two days. Layers per sheet and a subject naming rule make the overlap visible before it reaches the total.
Gross measured, openings never taken out
Fine when the scope prices gross, expensive when it does not. Decide which one the scope is asking for before you start, not while you are reconciling.
The revision measured, the addendum missed
Compare the current set against the one you took off. Revu has document comparison for exactly this, and a clouded revision that never got re-measured is the one that shows up after the bid.

How do I total up my measurements?
Use the Markups list. Sort or group by subject and Revu sums each group, so a set of area measurements comes back as one figure in SF. You can export that summary to CSV and price from it in a spreadsheet, or place a Legend on the sheet so the totals travel with the drawing.
Can Bluebeam count symbols for me?
Yes. VisualSearch in Revu takes an instance of a symbol you select and finds the rest on the sheet or across the set, and you can turn the results into count markups. It works from the appearance of the symbol, so it does better on a clean vector set than on a scanned one.
How long should a takeoff take?
It depends on the scope and the quality of the set, but the honest answer most estimators give is longer than the calendar allows. The measuring itself is rarely the hard part. The time goes on setting up scales, keeping markups organised well enough to total, and re-measuring after an addendum.
